    Project Overview

At Earls Court in London, the Stone Demonstrator has become one of the UK’s most high-profile explorations into low-carbon construction, showcasing how natural stone could help reduce the embodied carbon associated with traditional building materials such as steel and concrete.

Led by Groupwork alongside engineers Webb Yates and Arup, the three-storey installation forms part of the Design Museum’s Future Observatory exhibition programme and acts as a full-scale prototype for lower-carbon construction methods.

While the wider project focuses on structural stone construction, Bricklink and Brickability contributed to the Pocket Park public realm space adjoining the demonstrator, supplying the natural stone bricks used to create five bespoke seating and landscape installations throughout the exhibition.

    Pocket Park Stone Benches

Working closely with Ernest Park and Bishop Facades, Bricklink and Brickability supported the specification, design development and supply of the stone bricks used within the benches and architectural landscape features.

The installations combine integrated seating, framed openings and monolithic stone detailing, creating a series of functional public spaces that encourage visitors to interact directly with the material.

The stone bricks, manufactured by Germans Balagué and exclusive to the Brickability Brick & Building Materials Division, were supplied in a variety of natural tones to showcase the variation, texture and character achievable with natural stone.

The project also highlighted collaboration across BRCK Group businesses, with McCann Logistics coordinating delivery of the materials to site to support efficient installation and programme management.

    Low-Carbon Construction

The supplied stone bricks supported the Stone Demonstrator sustainability-led approach while also demonstrating the practical and aesthetic benefits of natural stone within contemporary design.

Key benefits of the stone bricks include:

    • Low embodied carbon
    • 100% recyclable natural material
    • Large-format and standard brick sizes available
    • Durable long-life performance
    • Bespoke specials and custom detailing capabilities

Beyond sustainability, the benches also demonstrate how natural stone can deliver warmth, texture and architectural quality within modern public spaces.

    Collaboration Through Design and Delivery

The Stone Demonstrator brought together architects, engineers, contractors and material specialists to explore new approaches to sustainable construction.

For Bricklink and Brickability, the project provided an opportunity to support an innovative architectural installation while showcasing the design flexibility and environmental potential of stone bricks within real-world applications.
