    Project Overview

Over eight development phases, The Ropeworks has delivered over 650 new homes to Edinburgh’s thriving Leith community. Comprising 318 private residential units and 250 affordable rental units, The Ropeworks provides a mix of townhouses and apartments for varying living requirements. Additionally, the scheme boasts open-plan living and communal park areas, with direct access to central Edinburgh and Leith’s active waterfront.

Working on Phase 6 of the scheme, the Bricklink team worked with Patience and Highmore Architects and S1 developments to deliver Crest Kingston Weathered Gault bricks to the Ropeworks townhouses. Following completion, the scheme received multiple awards, including ‘House of the Year’ at the 2023 Scottish Home Awards.

    Design to Completion

The design team for The Ropeworks focused on creating a development with a strong sense of identity that would transform the derelict industrial site into a vibrant, accessible community. As part of this, the team were seeking a buff coloured facing brick that complemented the bricks used in earlier phases while still retaining a separate identity for the townhouses.

Using their wide knowledge of brick types, Bricklink suggested the Kingston Weathered Gault brick from Crest Brick Slate and Tile. A buff multi brick, the Kingston Weathered Gault is creased with a sanded finish, providing the townhouses with interest and variation. This more textured brick choice then nods to the history of the site, offering a comforting feel to the family homes within the development, while smoother wirecut bricks were contrastingly used on the more modern apartment blocks.

Through this thoughtful design, the scheme now brings stylish yet comfortable living to a wide variety of the Leith residents.
