Overview
Butterbiggins Road is an affordable housing development built on the site of the former Larkfield Bus Depot in the south side of Glasgow. Delivered by Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited, this project now provides 186 homes for mid-market rent, including 152 one and two-bed flats and 34 two and three-bed houses.
The Bricklink team worked closely with the client, Link Group, and the architects at MAST to understand their brief and were pleased to supply buff and brown facing bricks, along with brick specials, to the project. The chosen bricks met the requirements for a high-quality yet cost-effective solution that complements the local architecture.
Design Concept
Glasgow's planning guidelines state that new developments should reflect the characteristics of the surrounding area and aim to establish a relationship with existing buildings through scale, materials and landscaping. These principles were central to the brief for this residential scheme, with an additional goal of using high-quality clay bricks that would stand apart from those typically used by large housebuilders.
The local streetscape along Butterbiggins Road features traditional four-storey buildings with natural stone and contrasting brickwork detailing. Whilst the new development has a more contemporary design, it pays homage to the existing architecture with its use of contrasting brick colours. These bricks were chosen to complement the weathered red and buff natural sandstone in the area, as well as copper aluminium panels and balconies also used on the project, with projecting brickwork details added along the ground floor for visual interest and texture.
Project Completion
Bricklink supplied the Ploegsteert Nomade Nordic and Millburn Ashen Brown bricks to the project at Butterbiggins Road to meet the project design brief. The team also provided several brick specials to accommodate non-standard building dimensions and consulted with the manufacturer on acceptable parameters for projecting brickwork. As well as meeting the visual requirements for the new development, the bricks supplied were in line with contractor Ashleigh’s precise cost plan, with price stability secured throughout the contract.
Effective collaboration amongst Bricklink, the contractors, the client and the architects continued into the construction phase. Over the 18-month delivery period, careful planning was key to the smooth running of the project, with high-frequency deliveries coordinated successfully during the simultaneous construction of multiple housing blocks.
Following the successful completion of the Butterbiggins Road project, another local residential scheme selected the same buff and brown bricks – a testament to the quality and appropriateness of the material choice. We are delighted that the development has provided much-needed additional housing and landscaped amenity spaces for the area and it’s residents.
