Project Overview
Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, King’s Stables Road Student Accommodation successfully provides high-quality living to students in one of the city’s most architecturally sensitive areas.
Designed by Fletcher Joseph Associates and delivered by Bowmer + Kirkland, the new buildings are part of a wider regeneration plan that integrates student accommodation, private residential units and commercial space.
The design team sought to create a modern facade that would fit seamlessly within the context of the local landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle. To achieve this, the Bricklink team specified and supplied the Titan Multi facing brick from Crest Brick, Slate & Tile.
Brick Selection
As a World Heritage Site, any new developments in Edinburgh’s old town must carefully consider the existing scenery and structures that make up such a significant identity. King’s Stables Road Student Accommodation is no different as it calls the iconic Edinburgh Castle its neighbour.
Visitors walking through Edinburgh’s Old Town will notice an abundance of stone-built structures, with the Castle being the most iconic. It was therefore necessary that the facing bricks chosen for this project blended seamlessly with these existing materials.
The Titan Multi facing brick achieves this blending of new with old as its mottled buff-grey tone mirrors the organic variation often found in natural stone blocks. Due to its manufacturing process, this stock brick is also subtly creased with a sanded texture to further replicate the properties of local sandstone. The resulting brickwork is rich with variation, depth and shadow, giving life to the elevations and avoiding the flatness that is sometimes associated with new builds.

Project Completion
Due to the project’s central location, situated at the centre of narrow medieval streets, deliveries and installations had to be carefully scheduled and coordinated while also adhering to conservation area constraints.
With years of experience supplying similar sites, the Bricklink team were able to support the project team throughout the build, ensuring the brick supply met both aesthetic expectations and construction timelines.
Upon completion, the King’s Stables Road development successfully delivers on its context-sensitive brief while bringing contemporary living to the historic quarter.
