    Project Overview

Having worked with the Archdiocese of Glasgow for more than 30 years, Page\Park Architects have now delivered a transformational £1.25m refurbishment to St Mathew’s Parish Church in Bishopbriggs.

The refurb includes a new interior and a side extension that offers improved lighting, visibility and accessibility to the church’s parishioners. Celebrated for these additional amenities; St Matthew’s parish also received a commendation in the Building Re-use category at the 2021 Scottish Design Awards.

Bricklink were very pleased to work with Page\Park Architects and Fleming Buildings Ltd to supply the Nomade Arctic brick to this project. Part of our exclusive range, this brick envelopes the church’s new extension, offering a contemporary exterior to the expanded worship space.

    Project Design

Constructed in 1948, the building was originally designed by Glasgow architects, Gillespie Kidd and Coia who are best known for their application of modernism in churches. St Matthew’s Church was also built in the wake of the Second World War and was therefore designed simply both inside and out.

In keeping with the modest design of the original build, Page\Park Architects sought a pale brick that would match the restrained pallet used across the project. Though understated, the architects still intended the expansion would offer the church a modern and assured facade and required the brick to assist this.

    • The utilitarian design of the existing building benefited our contemporary reworking, and we were able to create an extension that was confident and fresh, complementing the original building without requiring to shy away, or exist in deference.

    Project Completion

Understanding their client’s requirements, Bricklink were confident when suggesting the Nomade Arctic facing brick to the team. As a pale grey wirecut brick, this choice perfectly fits Page\Park’s contemporary design while the brick’s rolled finish adds a touch of texture to complement the original build.

Now completed, St Matthew’s Church is no longer burdened by its former narrow floorplan or run-down interiors and instead enjoys a flexible, functional space that elevates the celebration experience for all who attend this place of worship.
