Alfiam visit local school to teach brick manufacturing as part of Science Week.

Tim Murphy, Alfiam’s Managing Director, had the pleasure of attending his sons’ local primary school to teach the children the ins and outs of brick manufacturing.

But Tim didn’t go alone – he was accompanied by Mark Woolston from Ibstock’s Swanage Factory who brought something a little special for the children. Mark presented the class with clay and brick-making materials and the children had the opportunity to create their own bricks from scratch!

Tim reported that the 60-strong class were ‘mesmerised’ and thoroughly engaged in the session throughout. Best of all, the 12 bricks that were made with the class names etched into them will be fired and sent back to the school to be proudly displayed.

Overall, Ibstock were presented as a caring and environmentally friendly company, that really look after their staff and the local community. Mark spoke about the nature and wildlife around the quarry, the importance of releasing clean water into the sea, and the physiotherapy and ice cream provided to the staff. The science teacher even said he was in the wrong profession and wanted to become a Master Brick Maker, just like Mark.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mark and Ibstock for helping to make the talk such a success. Who knows, you may have inspired a future Master Brick Maker!
