    Overview

Hayfield Grove is a residential development in the village of Hallow, Worcester that puts sustainability at the heart of each new home.

Comprising 55 new houses, bungalows and apartments, each home is ‘zero carbon ready’ with eco-efficient features that minimise energy use and emissions while promoting long-term sustainability.

To envelop these sustainable new dwellings, Hayfield Homes sought a building material that would further the scheme's sustainability credentials. For this, facing bricks, with their high thermal mass, low embodied carbon and recyclability, were the natural choice.

    Material Selection

In addition to meeting their sustainability goals, the design team also sought a material that reflected the traditional nature of the existing homes in Hallow Village. The Hallow Design Guide from Hallow Parish Council lists red brick walls, first floor dormers and fluctuating rooflines as predominant parts of the area’s architecture.

To meet these architectural requirements, a number of red bricks were recommended to the Hayfield Homes team. Following consultation, the Malvern Village and the Richmond Smoked bricks from our exclusive range were selected, plus the Atherstone Red Multi from Forterra.

The choice of three bricks instead of one allowed for the bricks to be used in a blended manner, providing further variation to the facades and linking back to the traditional architecture of Hallow Village.

    Project completion

To select these materials, Hayfield Homes collaborated with David Sadler, Brickability’s Commercial Director who also worked with the team on the Hayfield Crescent development.

Dave’s existing relationship with Hayfield Homes was a major factor in the success of this project as their history made for an efficient and smooth specification process. Using bricks from Brickability’s exclusive range also assured supply and price stability for the team.

Further sustainability features at Hayfield Grove include air-source heat pumps, solar PV panels, underfloor heating and smart EV charging points. Combined with the selected bricks, these features demonstrate the power of thoughtful design, material selection and project collaboration for schemes like Hayfield Grove.
