Project Overview
McQueen Way is a new affordable housing development located in Croftamie, Stirlingshire, delivered for the Rural Stirling Housing Association.
Designed by Collective Architecture and managed by the JR Group, the scheme provides fourteen homes in a mix of cottage flats, terraces and semi-detached houses. Located at the edge of Croftamie village, the project required a design response that would feel modern while remaining rooted in its rural surroundings.
Bricklink’s Ken Tighe worked closely with the project team to support the development of the external envelope, resulting in the supply of both the Nomade Arctic facing brick and Hardie® Plank cladding in Soft Green. Together, these materials help achieve the calm and cohesive architectural identity that defines the development.
Community and Context
Croftamie is characterised by open landscape, mature tree lines and the softer tones found in traditional stone and render buildings across the village. As a result, the architectural approach was shaped by a desire to create homes that would integrate naturally with their setting rather than impose a more urban aesthetic.
Establishing the right palette was central to this. The development needed materials that could express a contemporary identity while still responding sensitively to the natural environment and rural character. These contextual considerations informed the direction of the facade strategy and guided discussions around colour, tone and texture ahead of final material specification.
Material Selection
After consultation, the Nomade Arctic from our exclusive brick range was selected for its pale grey tone and subtle texture, qualities that work particularly well in a village setting. The wirecut finish also provides a clean and consistent appearance while offering durability suited to Scotland’s climate.
Hardie® Plank cladding in Soft Green was then introduced to lighten the upper storeys and to create variation across the facade whilst still harmonising with the chosen brickwork. Its wood grain-effect and muted green tone, reflects the surrounding fields and woodland, helping the homes sit comfortably within the project landscape.
Both the brickwork and fibre cement cladding were installed by AJM Contractors.
Project Delivery
Bricklink supported the project through experienced specification input, supply logistics and technical assistance for the design and installation teams. This helped maintain quality and consistency across the facades and allowed the build programme to progress smoothly despite the challenges of a rural site.
Upon completion, McQueen Way delivers a well-considered residential environment that successfully reflects the landscape and character of Croftamie. The combination of carefully selected brick and cladding products creates a calm, contemporary aesthetic that integrates naturally into its surroundings, while ensuring the homes are durable and designed for long-term community benefit.
