Project Overview
A landmark regeneration scheme, Islington Wharf, Phase 2, is a canal-side mews development of 30 apartments and 16 townhouses featuring roof terraces, balconies, and private and shared gardens within the heart of Manchester. Conceived as an alternative to the city’s high-rise residential trend, the scheme prioritises community and connection through its low-rise scale and thoughtfully selected material palette.
This project boasts an impressive accolade in relation to its brickwork since it is the first building in Manchester’s city centre to use a chalk yellow brick – a striking departure from the city’s traditional red brick vernacular. Following the completion of Islington Wharf, this brick type has now become a more frequent feature across many areas of the city.
LBT were approached by Eric Wright Construction to provide insight on the brickwork and supply a range of products for the project. In total, LBT supplied nearly 300,000 St Ives Cream Rustica and 18,000 Windermere Grey bricks, together with over 250 ProSteel brick-faced lintels ranging from 570 to 2650mm wide, and 130 bolt-up units.
Design Concept
The Islington Wharf scheme was made to be different. Designed as an alternative to the high-rise accommodation that dominated big city skylines, this mews development was focussed on creating a welcoming sense of community through its scale and colour.
Light coloured bricks were an unusual selection for the facade and were chosen specifically to enhance the feeling of openness and inclusivity in this new neighbourhood.
Further interest was woven into the facade through textural elements such as projecting brickwork and 45 degree tooth brickwork bands. The use of such carefully considered brickwork is a testament to the hugely positive impact that a thoughtful selection of materials can deliver.
Project Completion
Islington Wharf, Phase 2, marked a continuation of LBT’s involvement with the scheme, having previously supplied materials for an earlier phase. Following the need for remedial work, our team’s familiarity with the project enabled us to offer seamless resupply of materials, which ensured consistency throughout the development and an efficient delivery of all products.
The result is a vibrant addition to Manchester’s residential offering, providing a sense of community and a welcoming escape from the bustling city centre.
