    Project Overview

Where outdated 1960s student housing once stood, a vibrant and modern student village has now transformed the University of Liverpool’s Greenbank campus. The development features four new residential blocks with 1,370 ensuite bedrooms, commercial spaces, catering and sports facilities, all thoughtfully arranged around landscaped courtyards within a conservation area.

LBT Brick and Facades supplied 700,000 facing bricks for the new five to eight-storey buildings as well as for the restoration of the site’s Grade II listed Greenbank House, executed over two phases. After careful deliberation with the architects at Sheppard Robson and the main contractor ULCCO Special Projects, the Melton Antique Blend brick was selected to provide a striking texture to the facade.

    Design to completion

With a conservation area and listed buildings to be considerate of, it was important that the selected brickwork at Greenbank Student Village reflected the character of the existing architecture and landscape. The chosen brick fit the purpose perfectly due to its colour variation and light texture. The reds and darker hues of the brick reflect the traditional brickwork of Greenbank House, whilst the light tones give a nod to the newly painted cream facades of the original building.

In addition, the colours and texture of the brick complement the metal cladding components that were selected for the facade. The result is a distinctive set of blocks with a shared visual theme that balances modern design with traditional architecture.

The university site was live throughout construction, which meant that restricted delivery windows had to be adhered to. LBT collaborated with the site managers to ensure that all loads were delivered efficiently and on time.

Thanks to the collaborative effort of all involved, Greenbank Student Village won the Best Halls category at the 2021 National Student Housing Awards.

    • LBT came on board at an early stage to help with the brick selection for the architect, working through many details to help simplify and reduce costs.

Their input with manufacturers to help secure a consistent product with coordinated firing led to a well-blended brick facade. All the special bricks were cut off-site and delivered in perfect condition.

The facades now sit in a rural setting of picturesque gardens and show what can be achieved by a focused and pro-active team.
