    Overview

Less than a 15-minute walk from Liverpool’s city centre, Limelight offers premium accommodation to students attending the University of Liverpool. The development features 566 bedrooms spread across two striking 16-storey blocks, each showcasing an impressive use of Armourclad metal cladding.

At the heart of the site, a communal area on the ground floor connects the two blocks, providing views of a landscaped outdoor space created as a secure and inviting garden for students to socialise.

Architectural Facades worked closely with Falconer Chester Hall architects and the main contractor BLCP (Blacklight) to design and supply bespoke products including Armourclad metal cladding, Armourclad expanded mesh, brackets and support structures.

    Design Concept

Limelight student accommodation was designed to transform a previously unused city-centre site into a sustainable and aspirational space that maximizes both the available area and its proximity to Liverpool’s bustling centre.

Limelight bridges the gap between modern innovation and historical homage, paving the way for future developments, whilst reflecting the site’s industrial past. This dual narrative is expressed through the use of Armourclad metal and mesh cladding. The building’s facade immortalises some of Liverpool’s industrial heritage, including the rag trade, with a weave-like pattern created using Armourclad expanded mesh. In contrast, the sheer side walls feature Armourclad metal cladding panels, with the geometric shapes referencing the slate works that once occupied the site.

Architectural Facades were pleased to work with the architects and contractors to help supply and design all the external facade cladding that helped to bring this ambitious vision to life.

    Project Completion

When this project was initially given the green light, construction was halted mid-way due to the original developer being unable to continue. The project was later acquired by Blacklight, who were able move to it through to completion with a re-worked design.

Despite the revised plans, Architectural Facades were able to supply Armourclad metal cladding to help meet the expectations of the new design. Armourclad, one of our most versatile cladding solutions, offers a vast array of metals and finishes with nearly limitless design potential, making it the perfect choice for the Limelight project.

The metal cladding can be extruded or folded into bespoke shapes, making it ideal for creative, modern, and distinctive applications. Its honeycomb technology ensures remarkable efficiency, allowing panels as thin as 0.7mm to extend up to 4 meters in length.

For decorative elements, sunscreens or ventilated spaces, Armourclad mesh cladding is also a standout choice for modern building designs. The expanded mesh can create intricate detailing with its 3D appearance, and the way the light moves across it helps to create the effect of a ‘moving’ facade. The range of colours and textures available also make it ideal for blending with other building materials and design elements.

Since its completion, Limelight has achieved platinum status in the Global Student Living Survey and was ranked as Student Crowd’s no.1 PBSA scheme in Liverpool.
