    Project Overview

The four-star INNSiDE hotel by Meliá offers 161 guest rooms along with dedicated spaces for meetings and events. Located on Newcastle’s Quayside, this vibrant urban lifestyle hotel has transformed the site of a disused commercial building, creating a dynamic hub that welcomes both guests and cultural events celebrating the city's people and heritage.

This Union Property Development was designed by architects FaulknerBrowns and managed by main contractor Robertson Construction. To reflect the character of the local architecture, the Brick Services team worked closely with the architects and contractors to select and supply a textured buff brick—the Maranello, which was installed by subcontractors P James.

    Design to Completion

A key aspect of the INNSiDE hotel’s design was creating a link between Quayside’s rich history and its modern evolution. To achieve this ambition, the size, scale and material palette of the project were all carefully considered.

The hotel is formed of two distinct blocks. The lower block was designed to reflect the size of the neighbouring Grade II* listed Quayside Bar. Its smaller scale also facilitates enhanced views of the River Tyne from the guest rooms contained within the taller, ‘L’-shaped block that overlooks it. This taller block extends to seven storeys, which echoes the proportions of the Grade I-listed High Level Bridge and other contemporary developments nearby. The intentionally sized elevations of this project allow the hotel to sit comfortably within its historic surroundings.

Thoughtful design details and creative additions to the facade also help the INNSide Hotel to connect with the area’s industrial heritage. The selected brick type was central to this connection, with Brick Services Ltd taking note of common brick and stone colouring of local buildings and structures. The texture of the chosen buff brick, the Maranello, allows it to harmonise with the stonework of its neighbours and also picks out hues from the High Level Bridge’s painted metalwork. Dark bronze detailing adds a refined contrast to the pale brickwork, reinforcing the visual link to the bridge’s structure, while lending a modern edge to the design.

By engaging with the architect early in the project, Brick Services Ltd ensured the selection of a brick that complemented the hotel's historic surroundings while successfully managing its supply throughout construction. The result is a facade that seamlessly blends traditional influences with contemporary design.

Since its completion, INNSiDE by Meliá has strengthened the connection between this section of the River Tyne and the redevelopment of the nearby Stephenson Quarter. Its thoughtfully designed exterior respects the area’s industrial heritage, whilst its presence has also brought economic benefits, supporting 80 new jobs and adding to the vibrancy of the historic quayside.
