Project Overview
Built on the former site of the 17th century pub ‘The Woodman Inn’, this development has brought three new homes to the village of Lower Upham, Hampshire. Although the original inn building was popular among the village and there was a desire to maintain it, further repair works could have compromised the structural integrity of the already dilapidated and empty pub. Therefore, permission was granted to build new properties, providing their design was sympathetic to the traditional housing styles of the area.
Brickmongers Wessex worked closely with Shedfield Construction to supply Malvern Village bricks, prefabricated arches, brick specials, plinth stretchers and returns to the project.
Design Concept
The architecture in and around Lower Upham has a distinctive style, which was incorporated into the designs of the three properties on the site of the Woodman Inn.
In terms of size, local buildings typically feature a reduced scale, with less visual bulk, and are generally no more than two storeys high. Elements such as porches, ground floor projections and simple roofing are all used to soften the outward appearance of the houses, and many of these features were used within the former pub project.
Porches were added to each of the properties and the plinths provided by Brickmongers to help break up the red-brick facades, reducing the bulkiness of the frontage.
A common feature of buildings in the area is the use of red brick, often with decorative brick elements such as brick banding, to create visual interest. Within the former Woodman pub development, Brickmongers supplied several prefabricated brick panels, including window and door arches, with a beautiful bullseye arch above one of the front doors.
The property located on the corner of Upham Street features a soldier course that helps to split the large road-facing wall, again creating a look of ‘reduced scale’. The Malvern Village was used for all brick elements, which created a sense of cohesion across the three houses, whilst also connecting them to the neighbouring buildings.
Project Completion
When it came to recommending a brick for this project, the Brickmongers team selected a high-quality product that would align with the local vernacular. The Malvern Village has become the go-to brick in the Upham area due to its beautiful blending with the local architecture and the striking pop of colour it provides. This brick has been widely used in nearby projects, consistently receiving positive feedback.
The darker tones of the Malvern Village brick complement the anthracite window frames, whilst its bright red hues pair elegantly with the flame-red clay roof tiles. The versatility of this brick made it an excellent choice, eliminating the need to select an additional brick for the project.
Thanks to the collaborative effort of the Brickmongers and Shedfield teams, this project ran smoothly and on schedule. The three new properties have also been well-received within the community – a testament to the thoughtful consideration of products and design.
