Project Overview
Part of the £750m Circle Square masterplan in central Manchester, the Circle Square car park provides over 1,000 spaces for visitors, residents and businesses across this major new urban quarter.
Spanning nine floors, with a hotel situated above it, Circle Square car park is defined by the eye-catching circular openings featured across the brick facade, elegantly referencing the area in which it sits. LBT Brick & Facades were pleased to work with architects Feilden Clegg Bradley to build on their original concept and bring it to fruition.
Ultimately, LBT arranged the creation of 5,000m² purpose made linear brick slips, which were produced in Germany before being sent to Northern Ireland. Here, Creagh Concrete cast them into concrete panels, to be shipped to site for installation.
Design Concept
Circle Square car park is positioned prominently next to the A24 Mancunian Way and therefore required a strong architectural presence for those travelling through the city.
The design team at Feilden Clegg Bradley also wanted to draw on the warehouse and viaduct architecture of industrial Manchester while still delivering the ventilation and daylighting that it required of modern-day car parks.
The resulting design, utilising red brick typical of Manchester’s vernacular and circular openings that occur rhythmically across the car park elevation, is one that combines memorable identity with a robust and structurally impressive building.

How we helped
Creating the circular motifs posed many challenges to the LBT team, especially when introducing the linear nature of the desired bricks, as these led to accuracy concerns during the pre-casting process.
To resolve this issue, ensuring the project design was achieved as desired, LBT were able to source and supply purpose-made brick slips to the project which were already profiled ready for casting. The pre-cast panels not only guaranteed the design but also significantly accelerated the installation process at Circle Square’s tight city centre location.
Since completion, Circle Square car park has achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating with a focus on carbon reduction as the building achieved a 34.2% improvement on Building Regulations for the conservation of fuel and power.
