The project is also part of the Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust’s wider investment into enhancing the safety, wellbeing and experience of both patients and staff. Designed by healthcare specialists Gilling Dod Architects and constructed by Key Construction, the Walton House facility includes a much-needed S136 suite and crisis care unit for the Stafford region. Replacing an out-of-date facility on the same site, Walton House provides 24/7 urgent assessment and support to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis who have come into contact with emergency services. As part of the delivery team, [LBT Brick & Facades](https://brickability.co.uk/businesses/lbt-brick-and-facades) supplied high-performance concrete bricks, specified through close consultation between Steven Leggott, LBT Commercial Manager, and Mark Cowpland, Associate Director at Gilling Dod. Having worked on several projects together, their longstanding working relationship ensured seamless collaboration and coordination. ## Design & Specification From the outset, the design team sought to create a space most suited to the end-users while also allowing for operational efficiency. Internally, these choices included purpose-built spaces and sustainable features that would reduce the energy-usage costs of the facility. Externally, the design team sought an attractive yet robust product that would require minimal maintenance throughout its lifespan. To meet these requirements, Steven recommended [concrete bricks](https://brickability.co.uk/bricks/concrete-brick) to the Gilling Dod team for their structural integrity, long-term weather resistance and low maintenance demands. Visually, the concrete bricks offer the project a contemporary aesthetic while the muted tones also bring a non-institutional character to the building, helping to reduce stress and create a calm atmosphere for patients. - This project is a testament to what can be achieved when trust is built into the process from the start. Working with Mark again made the whole journey a pleasure and the outcome is something we’re all genuinely proud of. By utilising an existing partnership, design resolutions and material supply were agreed more efficiently. This allowed the broader team to keep the focus on creating a building that serves the real, urgent needs of its community. Today, Walton House stands as a professional, thoughtful, and robust critical care environment.
