## Overview

Located in St. Werburgh's, Bristol, the Brooks Dye Works development is a vibrant regeneration of the former Brooks Laundry, which dates back to when the site housed industrial units in the 19th century. For over 130 years, Brooks Dye Works provided Bristolians with a range of dying and cleaning facilities, including service during both world wars when the factory kept both sheets and uniforms clean for British troops and medical personnel.

Designed and developed by Acorn Property Group with development partners Galliard Homes, the scheme successfully links Bristol's history with an exciting new chapter for the local community. Completed by main contractors, Halsall Construction, the site now accommodates 89 new homes immersed in a neighbourhood known for its eye-catching attractions, creativity and independent spirit.

The [Matching Brick](https://brickability.co.uk/businesses/matching-brick) team, who have been supporting customers in Bristol for over 30 years, were delighted to supply the Priory Red Multi bricks to this project.

## Design concept

Central to the scheme is the iconic chimney that remains standing from its 19th-century use. Once thought to be Bristol’s tallest chimney, it has remained a Bristol landmark and a nod back to the site's previous use since the factory’s closure in 1997.

For the designers at Acorn Property Group, it was clear that the 39-metre chimney had to remain at the heart of the project, enduring as a ‘cultural and geographical beacon’ whilst inspiring the architectural fabric of the new homes.

- The Brooks Dye Works scheme is a wonderful example of how history can be preserved and enrich the lives of those who live and work in these spaces today.

## Project completion

With the chimney in mind, the project team sought a [red facing brick](https://brickability.co.uk/brick-finder?token=n7pjsbY4hI5mrHSdsuvLrcbXH1UcpR6C&brickColour=9851&brickFinish=&brickType=&search=&page=1) that would match the historic bricks used on the structure as closely as possible. As brick matching specialists, the Matching Brick team was the ideal partner to achieve this and did so by recommending the Priory Red Multi brick.

Used across the facade of each new home, the brick ties the scheme together, creating a cohesive appearance and unified identity.

To further benefit its new inhabitants, the development also includes sustainable pedestrian and cycle routes, plus other sustainability features such as renewable timber frames, PV solar panels, electric charging points and a large array of newly planted trees. In recognition of the scheme’s achievements, the Brooks Dye Works project received the Bristol Civic Society 2023 Design Award which recognises quality design and improvements to the public realm.
