For impact sound insulation between floors and ceilings, this should not exceed 62 dB. Acoustic insulation is therefore a vital part of modern-day construction. Furthermore, these values are only the minimum. Depending on the performance benefit you’re looking for, from thermal to acoustic insulation, our recommended cavity wall insulation will change. For existing cavity walls, where an installer will need drill holes to access the internal cavity, mineral wool rolls, polystyrene beads or polyurethan foam can be used. In new builds where the cavity wall is unfinished, the options include mineral wool or fibreglass rolls, foam boards, foam beads and insulation blocks. Depending on the type of insulation you’re working with, the way it works will differ. However, generally, insulation works because it traps small pockets of air within its material. Working together, the setup of adjacent trapped air and insulation fibres prevents heat and sound particles from easily moving through the two substances and results in less heat loss or audio transfer. Can insulation get wet? Most insulations are not designed for significant exposure to water and therefore, where possible, should not be installed or kept in places that are likely to get wet. Different insulations will react differently to moisture, for example some insulation can lose its performance benefits and potentially become hazardous once wet. Other materials can withstand becoming damp and with appropriate ventilation, will dry out and return with its intended abilities.
